NDA partner Kuki People's Alliance withdraws support from N Biren Singh government in Manipur | India News

NEW DELHI: BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partner Kuki People’s Alliance on Sunday withdrew its support from the N Biren Singh government in Manipur over the continuing violence in the northeastern state that has claimed nearly 200 lives in the past three months.

“After careful consideration of the current conflagration, the continued support for the incumbent government of Manipur led by CM N Biren Singh is no longer fructuous,” read the letter written by KPA chief Tongmang Haokip to the state Governor, Anusuiya Uikey.

Other Kuki MLAs may not attend Assembly session
Earlier in the day, community leaders had stated that most Kuki MLAs irrespective of their party affiliations are unlikely to attend the Manipur assembly session slated to be called from August 21 in view of the continued ethnic violence.
“In view of the prevailing law and order situation, it will not be possible on my part to attend the upcoming session,” said LM Khaute, BJP MLA for Churachandpur, one of the worst-hit districts by the ongoing riots.
Khaute added that the violence and the lack of a resolution to demands made by the Kukis for a separate administration “will not make it possible for all the Kuki-Zomi-Hmar MLAs to attend the session.”
There are 10 Kuki-Zomi MLAs, including seven from the BJP, two from the Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA) and one independent, in the Manipur House which has a strength of 60 members.
In total, the BJP has 37 MLAs and has the support of 7 NPP MLAs, five NPF MLAs, and three independent legislators. The opposition legislators include five from the Congress and 1 from the JD(U).
