NEW DELHI: Bhartiya Janta Party‘s national president JP Nadda hit out at Mamata Banerjee government accusing it of supporting “rapists and criminals” after the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally turned violent on Tuesday. The All India Trinamool Congress, in turn, attacked the ‘BJP goons’ of forcefully breaking the barricade and trying to enter the restricted Nabanna area.
“The images of police highhandedness from Kolkata have angered every person who values democratic principles. In Didi’s West Bengal, to help rapists and criminals is valued but it’s a crime to speak for women’s safety,” Nadda said in a post on X.
The comments came after reports of lathi charge by the state police emerged during the “apolitical” rally by the student outfit, which was organised to voice protest against the rape and murder of doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar College.

The All India Trinamool Congress has, however, accused the ‘BJP goons’ of turning the protest violent in a bid to tarnish Mamata’s image.
“Everyone has seen that today BJP goons attacked, broke the barricade, attacked the police. Police injured. Still restrained. They are the ones who messed up. They are the ones who are calling the bandh for the deadlock,” TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said.
The saffron party also announced a 12-hour bandh in West Bengal on August 28.
“West Bengal BJP calls a 12-hour West Bengal bandh tomorrow,” Union minister and state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar said.
