Blast in central Kolkata leaves 1 person injured, bomb disposal squad cordon off area for investigation | India News


NEW DELHI: A blast on Saturday at the intersection of Blochmann Street and S N Banerjee Road in Central Kolkata injured a 58-year-old rag picker identified as Bapi Das.
Das, a resident of the footpath on S N Banerjee Road, sustained an injury to his right wrist.
According to sources, the Taltala Police Station (PS) was alerted to the incident that occured at around 13:45 hours.Officer-in-Charge (OC) Taltala, upon reaching the site, discovered that the injured individual had been taken to NRS Hospital for treatment.
A plastic gunny bag was found at the entry point of Blochmann Street.
The area was immediately cordoned off with security tape, and a Bomb Disposal and Detection Squad (BDDS) was called to assess the situation. BDDS personnel arrived, inspected the bag and surrounding vicinity, and, upon clearance, allowed traffic to resume.
A person who claimed to be an eyewitness of the incident told ANI, “We were standing nearby when the explosion took place. We immediately ran to the spot and saw that one person who was a rag picker was lying by. The person sustained an injury on his right wrist. The sound of the explosion was very loud. Police immediately reached here and took the injured to the hospital. The traffic was blocked. No one else was injured”
Bapi Das, who has no formal profession and recently began residing on the footpath, is currently receiving medical care. His statement is yet to record, which will be recorded once he recovers from the injury. Forensic teams along with the police are currently investigating to determine the cause and nature of the blast.
