The first week of the FIFA World Cup 2022 has seen both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo scoring, besides some big upsets in the form of Argentina and Germany losing their opening group games and a huge seven-goal win for Spain.
Here’s a look at how the numbers stack up so far:
3 – Germany have now lost their opening match in three consecutive major tournaments — (1-2 to Japan at 2022 WC; 0-1 to France at Euro 2020 & 0-1 to Mexico at 2018 WC). The latest loss was also Germany’s first in a game in which they held a halftime lead at the World Cup since 1978 vs Austria.

7 – Spain’s 7-0 rout of Costa Rica is their biggest margin of victory in a World Cup match.
18 – At 18 years and 110 days, Gavi became the youngest to score in a World Cup since 17-year-old Pele netted treble thrice in 1958. Gavi is also the first teenager to score for Spain in WC.
6 – By scoring 7 past Costa Rica, Spain became the sixth nation to score 100 goals or more in the World Cup. Brazil (231 goals) are leading the chart.

0 – Costa Rica did not manage a single shot in their 0-7 loss to Spain.
4 – Following their 0-1 defeat to Belgium, Canada remain scoreless in all four of their World Cup games played.
37 – At 37 years & 292 days, Ronaldo is now the oldest player to score for Portugal at the World Cup. He is also the youngest, having scored in the 2006 World Cup at 21 years and 132 days.
