Shakib Al Hasan is available for selection in Kanpur Test: Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha

Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha said that Shakib Al Hasan is available to play the second Test against India. Shakib did not have the best of outings in the opening Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, going wicketless in 21 overs and getting scores of 32 and 25.

In the first innings, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto held him back before introducing him into the attack after the 50th over. Shakib’s fitness came under the scanner after he looked out of sorts in the series opener. He was also reported to be facing issues with his finger and was seen biting a black strap while batting to keep his head position in place.

“There are no doubts about him. I haven’t heard anything from the physio about his injury. He is eligible for selection,” Hathurusingha told reporters in a press conference.

Hathurusingha admitted that Shakib needed to up his game, but also said that the veteran all-rounder is trying his heart out. The coach also acknowledged India’s strong bowling attack, comprising Ravi Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah and others.

“It’s not only about his performance, I am disappointed with everyone’s performance. We could have done much better in Chennai,” he said.

“I am sure that he himself feels that he needs to perform better. He batted well in the second innings, although he could not get a big score. It’s not that he isn’t trying. Opponents have a strong bowling attack,” Hathurusingha added.

Shakib came into the Test series after picking up a five-wicket haul for Surrey in their County Championship match against Somerset. He is also eight wickets short of reaching the landmark of 250 wickets in Test cricket.

After losing the opening Test by 280 runs, Bangladesh will be looking to make amends when the second Test starts on Friday, September 27 at Green Park.
