England pacer Ollie Robinson said he was looking forward to facing star Indian batter Virat Kohli in the upcoming five-match Test series in India, which begins on January 25. The England pacer had previously locked horns with the Indian star during India’s tour of England in 2021, where Robinson managed to dismiss Kohli on three occasions.
Now, as the two are set to face off again, Robinson is ready to embrace the challenge with a mix of respect and competitive spirit. In an interview with ESPNCricinfo, Robinson expressed his anticipation for the contest against Kohli, acknowledging the Indian batter’s prowess and reputation.
“You always want to play against the best players, don’t you? And you always want to get the best players out. Kohli is one of those. He’s got a big ego and I think playing on that, especially in India, where he is going to want to dominate and score runs, playing on the fact we’ve had battles in the past, is exciting,” Robinson said while speaking to ESPNCricinfo.
By acknowledging Kohli’s ‘big ego’, Robinson is hinting at the mental aspect of cricket, where sometimes getting into the opposition’s head can be as effective as executing the perfect delivery.
Ollie Robinson has not played for England since the third Test of the Ashes last year, when he suffered a back spasm and was ruled out for the rest of the series. With Stuart Broad’s retirement, Robinson could start the first Test alongside James Anderson in the pace department.
“I prepared like I was going to be the leader of the attack for years, and probably looked too far ahead, if anything. I think now, maturing a little bit and knowing what can happen, I’m preparing like I’m playing another series and just going to do my best for England. Not looking too far ahead, not looking to be the leader of the attack or anything like that. Support Jimmy, support the spinners, and just support the team,” Robinson added.
Robinson is focusing on the India series and hoping to contribute to the England Test team’s success without the pressure of leading the attack. His role is to bolster the bowling unit, which includes supporting veterans like James Anderson and aiding the spin department.
Robinson’s career has seen its fair share of ups and downs. From disciplinary issues early in his career to a remarkable comeback that saw him become England’s leading fast bowler, Robinson has demonstrated resilience and adaptability. His impressive haul of 66 wickets in 16 Tests, including standout performances in the Ashes, underscores his potential as a key player for England.
