NSE has announced that the stock market will open from 6 pm to 7:15 pm for Muhurat Trading on November 12 on the occasion of Diwali. This includes an 8-minute window for the pre-open session between 6 PM and 6:08 PM. Moreover, the block deal window will open at 5:45 PM.
The normal market session will take place between 6:15 PM and 7:15 PM. The trade modification will be allowed till 7:25 PM. Lastly, the closing session will be held between 7:25 PM to 7:35 PM.
The block deal session will be held between 5:45 PM to 6 PM on November 12. The call auction illiquid session, on the other hand, will take place between 6:20 PM and 7:05 PM.

During this time, traders and investors conduct symbolic trades, seeking good luck and prosperity for the upcoming financial year. It’s a unique blend of spirituality and finance, as it aligns with the belief that conducting trades during this auspicious hour can bring wealth and success.

According to experts, investing money in the stock market on the day of Muhurat trading is considered auspicious. Especially the veteran investors of the market definitely invest on this day. In such a situation, he earns lakhs of rupees on small investment. Investors wish for a good new financial year by starting trading on a special Muhurta on Diwali. Experts say that Muhurta trading is completely related to tradition. Most of the people buy shares on this day. However, this investment is very small and symbolic.
When was Muhurat Trading started?
According to several reports, the practice was originally started by King Vikramaditya in ancient India. However, the official recognition of this practice was given when BSE first adopted it in 1957.
NSE adopted this practice in 1992. Today, most brokers allow investors to participate in the Muhurat Trading session.
Muhurat Trading: Historical Sensex performance
A significant aspect of muhurat trading is its impact on the Sensex, India’s benchmark stock index. The performance of Sensex during Diwali muhurat trading is closely watched and interpreted as an omen for the upcoming year.
Historically, muhurat trading has often set a positive tone for the market, bringing in good luck and substantial gains for investors. It is not uncommon for a bullish trend to persist in the following trading days and months.
Over the years, the Sensex’s performance during Diwali muhurat trading has shown a mix of gains and losses. Notable trends include a significant surge in 2008 (5.9 per cent) and consecutive years of decline in 2016 (-0.4 per cent) and 2017 (-0.6 per cent). On the positive side, 2018 (0.7 per cent) and the more recent years, 2019 (0.49 per cent), 2020 (0.45 percent), 2021 (0.49 per cent) and 2022 (0.88 per cent), have seen positive gains, suggesting a more optimistic outlook during these sessions.
Since 2018, the market has been closing in the green in the Muhurat Trading session. In 2022, Sensex gained 0.88 per cent during the session. In 2021, it closed 0.49 per cent in the green. In 2020 and 2019, BSE’s benchmark index gained 0.45 per cent and 0.49 per cent during the session, respectively.
