New Zealand’s Finn Allen and Adam Milne will miss the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan due to injuries, posing a significant setback for the team as they prepare for the T20 World Cup. Allen, known for his explosive strike rates of 163.60 in T20Is and 93.26 in ODIs, has been sidelined with a back injury, while Milne, famed for his fastballs exceeding 150 kph, suffered an ankle issue during pre-departure training. The absence of these key players has led to the inclusion of Tom Blundell and Zak Foulkes in the squad. Blundell, at 33, brings experience and versatility as a top-order batter and wicketkeeper. On the other hand, 21-year-old all-rounder Zak Foulkes received his maiden call-up to the national team, a testament to his impressive performances in domestic cricket, particularly his bowling figures for Canterbury and a batting strike rate that caught the selectors’ attention.
“We feel for both Finn and Adam, suffering injuries so close to the start of the tour. They have been strong performers for us in the T20 format since the last World Cup,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said.”Our support staff and medical networks will be working closely with both players over the next few weeks to complete plans for their treatment and subsequent return to cricket.” This reshuffling occurs amidst New Zealand’s preparation for the five-match T20I series starting in Rawalpindi next Thursday, serving as a crucial phase for both teams in gearing up for the T20 World Cup scheduled in the United States and the West Indies in June. The New Zealand cricket team, already navigating through the challenge of missing a dozen players, now faces additional pressure with the loss of Allen and Milne. However, the inclusion of Blundell and Foulkes offers a blend of experience and fresh talent, potentially opening new strategies and dynamics for the team as they aim to make a strong statement in the upcoming series and beyond.
“Zak has had an impressive season for Canterbury including being their leading wicket-taker in all three competitions,” Stead said. “He has displayed impressive skills with the ball, particularly in T20 cricket for the Kings. We also know he has skills with the bat, and it will be an excellent opportunity for him to be part of the group.”
